The weather surprised us with some warm sun rays at the Fish Hoek beach cleanup in August. Well done to the volunteers who strolled with us on the beach to pick up plastic, we had a fantastic time chatting to you. Our volunteers found plastic all along the tide line, from small microplastic bits to larger packaging, we found a variety of plastics. Also in on it was the famous straw, lollipop stick and of course the cigarette butt. Did you know that we hand out free butt bags that can be used to extinguish cigarettes while you are on the road? Check them out at our next cleanup and get one for free, cigarettes do not have to be litter....no butts about it! ;)
The tide was very low on the day, so we had a look at what is growing in between the rocks on the right hand side of the beach. And wow, we were spoiled with lovely colourful sea anemones with tentacles in all colours. Sea anemone are named after a terrestrial flower, however their are not a plant at all. Sea anemone are invertebrates that feed by filtering the water or even catch small prey like fish or crustacea. Their tentacles are filled with a neurotoxins that can paralyze their prey and then move their prey towards their mouth. However, there is one fish that is not affected by their toxin - the clownfish is unaffected by the sting and even takes shelter in between the tentacles from other predators.
You can find all the beautiful pictures from our beach day below. Thanks again to our dedicated volunteers that made a difference, you guys rock!
Next Fish Hoek Beach Cleanup is on Saturday, 7 September 2024, 9am - 12 pm. Everyone is welcome, bags and gloves will be provided!
Thank you,
