Beach Cleanup February: Fish Hoek Beach shines after community effort

On Saturday, 3 February, community members and environmental enthusiasts gathered on Fish Hoek beach to join forces for the monthly Fish Hoek Beach Cleanup. Thank you to all the volunteers that joined us, you are amazing! We love bringing individuals with a shared goal together to promote a sustainable future for our coastal gem. But let's talk more about our beach cleanup.

The event kicked off at 9 am with our volunteers armed with gloves and bags to tackle the litter on the beach. Some of the most common items we found include microplastic, straws and lollipop sticks, but there was one item that topped it all. Cigarette butts. All volunteers reported an increased amount of cigarette butts that were left on the beach and promenade. Within only 30 min our volunteers have collected hundreds of butts. We were joined by volunteers from Maxibin that developed a fantastic solution for smokers on the beach: the Butt Bag. The Butt Bag is a cute little pouch that serves as a portable ashtray for smokers outdoors and especially on our beaches. You can now receive your free Butt Bag at any of our beach cleanups. No Butts about it! :)

The next Fish Hoek Beach Cleanup is on 2 March 2024, 9 am - 12 pm.

Thank you and we see you all on the beach again!
